Area 1 Non-Negotiables

Every Child....Every Day....Every Way

As we strive to increase student achivement, we will work with "Every Child....Every Day...Every Way".
Area 1 Non-negotiables are pillars to this success:

  • Every lesson is designed so all students can meet or exceed the Georgia Curriculm Standards.
  • Every lesson is standards based using Backward Design.
  • Each concept taught will have clear outcomes and a written product, rubics or authentic assessment to measure student mastery.

As we work hard to help our students to become life long learners, please reference the non-negotiables.

Learning Fun in Area 1

HSD and Helen1 Helen Kimbrough is the author of "Ocean Waves and Other Tales," a multicultural collection of simply told stories accompanied by a musical CD. Inspired by her sons, Ms. Kimbrough created a book coupled with melodies to encourage her children, and other children to enjoy reading and learning. Ms. Kimbrough read her book to the first grade classes at Harmony Leland Elementary. This gave the students the experience of meeting a real author and asking important questions about writing.Austell primary 1st 020 Austell Primary Kindergarten 003 Austell Primary Kindergarten 005 Austell Primary Kindergarten 001 Kindergarten students at Austell Primary are able to verbalize standards due to some great teaching coupled with the America's Choice Workshop Model. Pictured here you can see some examples of their standards boards along with how they are used to drive instruction. Click below to view a short video.

Principal, Hermia Simmons-Deveaux, models instructional leadership at Harmony Leland by leading a new reading initiative called DEAR time. Each day at a set time, students Drop Everything And Read. Mrs. Simmons-Deaveaux uses this time to actively be involved in the classroom as the students practice their reading skills.  Here she reads to a kindergarten classroom.

Data Teams and Resources

As we here in Area 1 continue to use data to drive our instruction and to formatively assess every student’s progress, we must use that gathered evidence to tailor instruction in order to meet prescribed learning goals.
This presents a need to work faster and smarter.  Hopefully, the resources provided in this blog will help you with this challenge.
